In 1997, with the help of my friend Yumi Kobayashi, I managed to import two male kittens from the streets of Japan to expand my breeding program. I thought I was getting a blue and white and a solid black. The solid black turned out to be a black smoke! The gene that causes a black cat to have silver roots and a brown tabby cat to be a silver tabby is a dominant gene. The expression of this gene hasn't been seen in the North American Japanese Bobtail gene pool since the 1970s.

The blue and white, Aozora of Janipurr (Jake), eventually went to live with Beth Graham in Virginia. The smoke, Shiranui of Janipurr (Elwood), stayed at Janipurr and became the basis for the new revival in smokes and silvers in North America.

Ginchika is proud to have produced CFA's first Silver Tabby Grand Champion: GRC Ginchika Gin Tora of Rockinashi, and the first two Silver Patterned Mi-ke Grands: GRC Ginchika Xquisite in Silver and her daughter, GRC,RW Ginchika Fuzakeru of Rockinashi.

Elwood sired a smoke tortie female named Candy (Janipurr's CanUSmellSmoke?) and a red smoke and white male named Eri (Janipurr's Erito Nakama). Then he went to live with Nikki Crandall-Seibert in Illinois to be bred to her tabby and white girls. On December 27th, 1999, Nikki and I co-registered a cattery name, Ginchika (which means Silver Underground), to share the new silver and smoke kittens we were producing. Thus, Ginchika Japanese Bobtails was born!
